Class Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Belly Dance Instruction

Can I come try your class for free to see if I like it first?
There is not a drop in or "try it free" option for the Tuesday night class.  If you would like to come observe, please contact Stacey first.  Tapestry Dance studio offers new students the first class free, although there is a school registration fee of $10.

When does the next series start?
Typically the next series will start immediately following the current series.  Please check the classes page for dates.

Which beginner class is right for me... Monday or Tuesday?
Because the Tuesday night class is a series, that means that the material will build from week to week.  Each series has a different theme, and therefore a different focus on specific material. The Monday class is drop in, so each week may have a different number of participants.  The Monday class also incorporates the use of finger cymbals during a portion of class, while the Tuesday class does not use cymbals unless that happens to be the theme of the six week series.

What if I miss a class?
There are no refunds or credits for missed classes.  Exceptions are made on a case-by-case basis for serious injuries with doctor's instructions.

Are there any fitness level (or age, size, etc.) prerequisites for your classes?
Classes are comprised of students of varying age, fitness level and dance experience.  There are no prerequisites to attend a beginner class.  Movements and exercises can be modified to accommodate individual challenges or issues.  Everyone has a boundary to push through, whether it be physical strength, flexibility, footwork or muscle coordination.  The most important thing is to remember to keep a good attitude and remember that dance takes time, patience and persistence (like so many things in life).

What style do you teach?
Class technique is based on the Suhaila Salimpour format, which means (in part) that movements are explained and executed from a muscular perspective.  The focus is on executing hip and torso movements in isolation from footwork, arm work, body line and weight placement.  Drills are conducted in order to build muscle memory while challenging and controlling unconscious muscle memory movement.  The ultimate goal is then purposeful movements that can be layered independently or simultaneously based on the dancers personal choice of expression.  The short answer?  No style - just technique, options, examples and concepts.
